BHS Class of '74
Virtual Reunion

Welcome to the Discussion Boards

This discussion board is open to all 1974 graduates of Belleville High School and friends. You are not required to register or log in at this time. As long as the rules of etiquette are followed, we'll keep it that way.

This discussion board is moderated. That means that posts may be deleted or edited as deemed appropriate by the moderators.

This discussion board is not terribly user friendly, but it was free. I'm rewriting much of it to make it easier to use, but that may take awhile. So patience is requested in the interim and suggestions about enhancements are appreciated.

The discussion board currently has four areas of discussion. If you'd like to see another area of discussion, please send a suggestion.

Health and Fitness is an area to discuss health and fitness related concerns, questions and tips. It's also the place to go for support as you deal with health issues.

Humor is a place to post jokes and other entertaining items. You can't reply to posts to humor. Feel free to use made up aliases when posting humor. This is supposed to fun.

General Discussion is a place where you can post new topics that you'd like to discuss with other members of the class. We're a diverse group and discussion topics may represent opinions that are not your opinions. Be forewarned.

Networking is a place to post business related information. Tell us about your business, post job openings for your company, post requests for information related to business. Are you looking for work? Let us know. Is your kid looking for work? Post that too.

Etiquette

This message board will abide pretty much by the Usenet Rules of Etiquette.

The Do's and Don'ts of Posting

This guide is adapted from the very helpful "A Primer on How to Work With the Usenet Community" by Chuq Von Rospach. For a more complete guide to Usenet posting rules, search on Google Groups for 'usenet posting rules' or just click here.

The cheat sheet for posting

Never forget that the person on the other side is human.

Because your interaction is through a computer it is easy to forget that there are people "out there." Situations arise in which emotions erupt into a verbal free-for-all that can lead to hurt feelings. Please remember that we are a diverse group. Do not attack people if you cannot persuade them with your presentation of the facts. If you are upset at something or someone, wait until you have had a chance to calm down and think about it. Try not to say anything to others you would not say to them in person in a room full of people.

Be careful what you say about others.

You read these posts; so do other people. Information posted on the net can come back to haunt you or the person you are talking about. Think twice before you post personal information about yourself or others. Posting personal information can be extremely hazardous -- remember that this is the internet and not a secure environment. If you don't want it known by a large segment of the world's population, don't post it.

Be brief.

Never say in ten words what you can say in fewer. The longer you make your article, the fewer people will bother to read it.

Write well.

Most classmates have not stayed in contact with everyone over the years. How we will get to know you again may be only by what you say and how well you say it. Take the time to make sure your posting will not embarrass you later. Minimize spelling errors and make sure the article is easy to read and understand. Avoid the temptation to WRITE IN ALL CAPS when you want to make a point. Writing is an art that requires practice. You are your words on this board. Choose them carefully.

Use descriptive subject lines.

The subject line enables a person with limited time to decide whether or not to read your article. Keep your subjects short and to the point.

Stay on topic.

If you are posting a reply, make sure it addresses the original topic. If you have something new to say, use the "Start A New Discussion" form. Likewise, don't start a new thread if you are responding to something someone else has already posted. Click on their message and use the "Post Reply" form that shows up under the message.

Be careful with humor and sarcasm.

Without the voice inflections and body language of personal communications, it is easy for a remark meant to be funny to be misinterpreted. Subtle humor tends to get lost, so take steps to make sure that people realize you are trying to be funny. The net has developed symbols called emoticons to help convey emotions. A common one is :-) for a smiley face (look at it sideways) which should be interpreted as 'this is meant to be funny'.

Be aware that frequently satire is posted without any explicit warnings. If you find an article outrageous, ask yourself if it may be intentionally inflammatory. Don't post a self-righteous rebuttal if you suspect someone is just fishing for users with low humor thresholds.

Only post a message once.

If your message or response is posted twice, please contact help@blackstone-design.com to have the duplicate removed.

Limit line length and avoid control characters.

Try to keep your lines of text to less than 80 characters for optimal readability. If people quote part of your article in a followup, short lines will show up better. Hitting return when you get to the end of the entry form will put a line break after each 80 characters.

Please do not use boards as an advertising medium.

Advertisements are rarely appreciated and they take up valuable hard disk space. Blatant ads will be deleted.

Avoid posting content from outside sources

We have a limited amount of server space available for this discussion board. You are welcome to quote other sources, but please do not copy and post information that is emailed to you. You are welcome to include links to other sources in your message, but content containing excessive quoted material may be deleted or edited by the moderators.
